It is with much sadness that we learned of the passing of Dr. Michael Marker in January of this year.
Michael had a long and productive career as a scholar and activist for Indigenous rights, including those of his own Lummi community. We new him as a kind and thoughtful person who generously joined our I/S initiative in its early stages, providing insightful guidance and wisdom as we sought our path. Michael was our keynote speaker at our 2018 workshop where his address, “A Beginner’s Thoughts on Place-ness and Indigenous Science,” reminded us of the value in doing good works, the importance of humility in that goal, and the need to be patient with each other and ourselves. Michael was a regular participant in our seminars, and we will miss his warm and gentle laughter, his ready smile, and his encouraging enthusiasm, which elicited the best in all of us. We extend our deep condolences to his family and friends and share in their grief. He will be sadly missed. Please look to these links for memorials to Michael: Thinking Historically; UBC.
